Send Prometheus metrics
If your services expose a Prometheus /metrics endpoint (an exporter such as node_exporter, redis_exporter, nginx-prometheus-exporter or kafka_exporter, or your own application), the OpenTelemetry Collector can scrape it and send the metrics to Televane. You keep your existing exporters and scrape settings, and you don't need Prometheus or a Televane agent.
1. Create an ingest token
- In the portal open Administration › API keys and create a token with the ingest scope.
- Copy it (it starts with
obs_). It is shown once — keep it in your secret store, not in source code.
2. Configure the Collector
Use the contrib distribution of the OpenTelemetry Collector (otelcol-contrib), which includes the Prometheus receiver. The scrape_configs section uses Prometheus syntax, so you can paste in the jobs from your prometheus.yml:
receivers:
prometheus:
config:
scrape_configs:
- job_name: node
scrape_interval: 30s
static_configs:
- targets: ["10.0.0.11:9100", "10.0.0.12:9100"]
- job_name: redis
scrape_interval: 30s
static_configs:
- targets: ["10.0.0.20:9121"]
processors:
batch: {}
exporters:
otlphttp/televane:
endpoint: https://ingest.televane.com
headers:
Authorization: "Bearer ${env:TELEVANE_TOKEN}"
service:
pipelines:
metrics: { receivers: [prometheus], processors: [batch], exporters: [otlphttp/televane] }
Start the Collector with the token in its environment, for example TELEVANE_TOKEN=obs_YOUR_TOKEN otelcol-contrib --config collector.yaml.
What you will see
- In Metrics › Custom metrics: every scraped metric with its labels (
job, instanceand the exporter's own labels). You can filter and group on them, chart them and alert on them. - Counters, gauges, histograms and summaries all arrive.
Good to know
- Custom metrics are part of Pro and above, and of the 14-day Pro trial that every new account starts with.
- A 30-second scrape interval is a good default. Each scraped series counts toward your data volume and your series limit, so use the Collector's
filterprocessor or Televane's pipeline rules to drop metrics you don't need. - Televane doesn't accept Prometheus remote write or run PromQL. Queries use the Custom metrics query builder.
- Exponential (native) histograms are not supported yet; exporters send classic bucket histograms by default.
- To send traces and logs as well, see Send OpenTelemetry data.
